Character information
Name: Aziraphale (Alias: Francis Fell)
Age: Many hundreds of years old, appears 35
Date of Birth: Unknown, legally has had it written as 7 September 1980
Canon: Good Omens
Species: Canon: Angel (Principality) | AU: Outcast Fae
Role: Full-Time Instructor at Redbright Institute, with minor connections to the Outreach Program and the school music department
Rank: 2
Background: Aziraphale is an outcast fae posing as a metahuman named Francis Fell. He used to be a moderately powerful apple tree nymph of the Seelie Court. Fascinated by the human realm and the human race, Aziraphale would spend much time there, playing games with humans to study their reactions. He was often joined by an Unseelie fae whom he hesitantly considered a friend (despite the two of them usually not seeing eye to eye).

Time spent both in the human realm and frivolously hanging around an Unseelie fae caused Aziraphale's attitudes towards his own court to gradually shift, and he began questioning the pettiness of fae politics. He and the Unseelie fae often tried to get around their political boundaries through loopholes, and helped to maintain each other's ranks through such subterfuge. Eventually, discovery of this misconduct and his friendship with an Unseelie fae destroyed Aziraphale's reputation. Considered a mockery and a disgrace, Aziraphale was cruelly cast out from the Other Realm. The fate of his Unseelie friend is entirely unknown to him, and he has not seen the other fae ever since.

He's spent thirty years in the human world. For the first seventeen Aziraphale had an incredibly rough time, homeless and often in danger of being picked off by other supernatural beings, particularly vampires. Eventually he was found by the Outreach Program and taken to Redbright Institute, where he received special help to create a human identity and adjust to living in the human world. While the higher staff are aware of what he is, to students and general staff he is considered a metahuman. The school helps him to hide his identity in various ways, as he wishes to avoid prejudice, being targeted by vampires, and getting caught up in any more fae politics.

Wanting to repay the institute (since he does not believe in owing debts, as a fae) and wanting to help others that may have had similar experiences to his own, Aziraphale joined Redbright's staff. He first sought to join their Outreach Program, but this position would have made hiding his identity harder, so he's instead become an instructor with some loose ties to the Outreach Program. He is making efforts to have struggling outcast fae be more frequently sought out and helped by the program.

Aziraphale is currently an instructor at Redbright Institute that teaches an entry level course called Adjustment to Life in the Supernatural Community, open to all ages. The course covers general need-to-know information about local supernatural groups and species, the rules and regulations of the local supernatural community, interspecies relations and tolerance, and general adjustment to living within a diverse supernatural community (whether it's humans or metahumans learning to exist with supernatural creatures, or vice versa). The program also encourages students to seek out support groups that satisfy their special needs, and is a required course for most new students. Aziraphale is also asked to help with choir practice from time to time, as he is an extraordinary singer.

Personality: While he is an outcast, Aziraphale still remains a Seelie fae at heart and believes in the concepts that the Seelie stand for, such as summertime and music. What Aziraphale doesn't believe in is the true and rather wicked nature of Seelie politics, and fae politics in general. Most fae have holier-than-thou attitudes towards every other creature on the planet, even towards each other, and the Seelie especially find themselves infallible. Aziraphale has moved past such close-mindedness to an extent far greater than most other fae, able to find some deep appreciation for humans where other fae have none. While Aziraphale is naturally opposed to Unseelie concepts, he doesn't actually find Unseelie fae any worse than most Seelie fae, and used to be rather jealous of their free nature, as he always felt duty-bound.

Aziraphale was once very mischievous towards humans, playing tricks on them along with his Unseelie friend in order to study them. He's since abandoned this behavior as he is now a permanent member of the human world, but is still infinitely fascinated by human nature. He watches people and their reactions intensely when interacting with them, and is constantly surprised by them. It may be noticeable to others from time to time that Aziraphale is studying them closely to gauge them, and that he genuinely can not understand certain emotions. Sometimes he may not know how to handle certain reactions, or may even ask how or why someone is feeling a certain way, making him seem a bit socially awkward. This is true of his interactions with all species that are not other fae, though especially humans.

As he wishes to stay out of fae politics for good and is wary of his true identity being discovered, Aziraphale is generally untrusting of most strangers and rather closed off to people as a whole. He especially doesn't like vampires, though he does his best to tolerate them. While on the whole he's a very pleasant person to talk to, Aziraphale has trouble making close personal relationships and has never had a friendship as meaningful as the one he'd left behind in the Other Realm. He isn't very easy to befriend anyway since, once people get to know him, they quickly discover that he holds a rather cynical attitude, a bit world-weary about the dog-eat-dog nature of the supernatural world. He may also accidentally trivialize human lives due to their transience, a bad habit carried over from his previous life.

Aziraphale is also an old-fashioned person, as modern technology is not fae territory (and Aziraphale is a very classical person regardless.) For instance, he uses a very old flip-phone and rides a bicycle to get almost everywhere, and he prefers classical music over pop music. Technology often changes more quickly than a perpetual being like himself can even comprehend. Aziraphale also has some difficulty understanding human social concepts, such as funerals or traffic wardens, and can come off as rather clueless or insensitive.

Powers & Possessions:
Powers:

Aziraphale is obviously far less powerful than he was before, now that he is an outcast, and as such many of his powers have diminished since being cut off from the Other Realm.
  • Can put minor illusions on himself and other people or objects (wears off after the stroke of midnight and cannot be redone until sunrise)
  • Can detect the presence of other supernatural forces/beings (he cannot tell what someone is precisely unless they are a fellow fae)
  • Can see ghosts and spirits
  • Can heal quickly
  • Can sense illusions and see through them with some concentration
  • Able to fulfill minor wishes if contracted (or forced to, via having his name called) - nothing more significant than small, temporary magic that lasts only until the stroke of midnight
  • Ability to grow plants with ease and heal sick plants with a just a touch; this can be a draining process depending on the kind of plant/the damage done/the rate of growth (Growing a mature tree all at once will make him very weak and tired for at least a week)
  • Can bewitch a person by kissing them (his mouth produces a special nectar) and bring them under his control, though only for a short period (about five minutes)
  • Is an amazing singer whose voice attracts animals and can enchant people to either enter a dreamlike state or fall asleep
  • His rather beautiful dancing can enchant people to start dancing along with him, even if they don't initially want to; effects wear off immediately after he stops dancing
  • Aziraphale's life force is connected to a very specific apple tree by a duck pond in St. James's Park, from which he was born several hundred years ago; while he can be severely hurt he can not be destroyed unless this tree is destroyed first, and his well-being is tied closely to the health and state of the tree
  • Able to enchant the apples that grow from his personal apple tree (apples that help one to sleep better, apples that fill you up with one bite, apples that taste so good all others will forever taste rotten in comparison, apples that induce an intense sensation of lust in the one that eats it, and of course poison apples that will kill any mortal creature within the first three bites)

    Possessions:

  • Enchanted apples - kept in his fridge in his flat for personal use (ultra-delicious ones and sleep-inducing ones; he has a single poison apple on hand just in case, though none of the filling ones or lustful ones as he has no personal use for those)
  • Milk, Honey, Whole-Grain Bread, Wine, and Tea - literally the only food kept in his home
